ABOUT ME

Meet Jourdan!

Hey there! I'm so happy you're here! I love helping my community navigate the adoption process and look forward to helping you too! Like I said on the homepage, think of me as your homegirl that adopted. I'm going to keep it real the entire time and help you the best ways I know how.

MY STORY

I was once like YOU…

When my husband and I decided to move forward to adopt, we were filled with excitement and hope. But as a Black couple, we quickly realized that the adoption process presented unique challenges for us. Determined to navigate this path successfully, I turned to my journalistic skills and dove into research.

For six months, I looked into countless articles, blogs, books, and online communities. But, as I immersed myself in all of the information, I couldn't help but notice a glaring disparity. Almost every resource I came across seemed to be created by middle or upper-middle-class white women. The YouTube videos I watched, and the blogs I read—all featured individuals who didn't necessarily share my experiences or background.

This lack of representation was further magnified when I joined adoption Facebook groups. Scrolling through countless posts and discussions, it became apparent that these spaces were predominantly occupied by white hopeful parents and adoption professionals. While their stories were valuable and insightful in their own right, I wanted to connect with others who could relate to our unique perspective as a Black couple navigating the adoption process.

It was disheartening to see the only viral adoption posts circulating online predominantly featuring white parents adopting children of color. Although these stories were undoubtedly heartwarming and showcased love knows no bounds, they didn't fully capture the diverse experiences within the adoption community. When it was time to attend the orientation with our adoption agency we were one of 2 Black couples out of around 40 couples in attendance.

But here's the thing—I didn't let these observations discourage me or make me feel isolated. Instead, they ignited a fire within me to create change and foster inclusivity within the adoption space. Maybe it's the Taurus in me that wouldn't let me give it up. Armed with my newfound knowledge and determination, I poured into my community through our Facebook group. The adoption professionals started taking notice and started to reach out to me directly to find Black/biracial and interracial hopeful families

As someone who has walked a similar path successfully—someone who understands the challenges you may be facing—I want you to know that you're not alone. Together, we can build a supportive community that embraces all voices and experiences within adoption. Remember, there is strength in unity, and together we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way!

MY OTHER PASSIONS

  • FITNESS

We're an active family that enjoys working out together. We like to swim, take walks and ride bikes together.

My husband & I also enjoyed kayaking when we lived in Florida.

  • TRAVELING

We love to travel! One of my favorite domestic trips was Breckenridge, Colorado where we snowboarded for the first time. International would have to be a cruise port in Honduras, even though I got stuck in coral while snorkeling and came out with a lot of cuts.

I also LOVE Disney! We used to be annual pass holders.
